Find the MC and USDOT numbers

They should be on the website, not buried. Ours are MC #774106 and USDOT #2273104. A company that will not state them is not a company.

Look them up on SAFER

The FMCSA SAFER system is public and free. Confirm the legal name matches what you were told, the authority is active, and there is a bond or insurance on file.

Ask broker or carrier, directly

Both are legitimate. Being unclear about which one you are is not. A broker should tell you that the deposit is a broker fee and that claims go to the carrier.

Then check the payment method

Card or a traceable method for the deposit. Anyone insisting on Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, crypto or a wire for a deposit is choosing irreversibility on purpose.
