Common Auto Transport Scams and How They Work
Every one of these works the same way: it exploits the gap between the moment you pay and the moment you see your car. Here is each one, plainly described.
Call 239-273-4649The bait quote
A number 30–40% below every other quote you received. It exists to win the booking, not to move the car. No carrier accepts it, the load sits, and two days before your date you get the call explaining that the price has to go up. The tell is a quote given without any questions about the vehicle's condition, dimensions or access.
The phantom carrier
The 'carrier' assigned to your load does not exist, or has revoked authority. Ask for the carrier's legal name, MC number and certificate of insurance at dispatch, and check the MC on SAFER. A broker who cannot tell you who is hauling your car has not dispatched it.
The vanishing deposit
A large upfront 'deposit' — often the full quoted amount — collected by an irreversible payment method. There is no carrier and there never was. A legitimate deposit is a disclosed broker fee, and the carrier's balance is paid at delivery.
The ransom load
The vehicle is collected, then the driver demands more money before releasing it at delivery. This is why the dispatch paperwork must state the carrier's exact pay and payment method before pickup, and why you should photograph the truck, DOT number and plate on shipping day.
The cloned website and spoofed number
Legitimate branding, copied content, one changed phone number. Verify the MC number against the domain you are actually on, and be suspicious of any company reachable only through an ad.
The unsigned Bill of Lading
Not always malice, often carelessness: a driver who rushes you through a delivery signature in the dark. Damage not written on the BOL at delivery is nearly impossible to claim. Inspect in daylight, compare to your pickup photos, and write it down before you sign.
