Leg one — Naples to the port
An open or enclosed carrier runs the vehicle from your Naples address to a West Coast port, usually Long Beach or Oakland, or occasionally to a Gulf or East Coast sailing depending on the schedule. This is a normal 7–10 day cross-country move with the same staging constraints any Collier County pickup has.
Leg two — the ocean sailing
The vehicle sails either roll-on/roll-off or in a container. Oahu has the most frequent departures; Maui, Kauai and Hawai'i Island usually add an inter-island leg and several days. Sailings run on a fixed schedule, so missing one costs a week, not an afternoon.
Leg three — port collection
You or a nominated agent collects the vehicle at the destination port with photo ID and the original paperwork. Port storage charges start accruing quickly after the free period, so plan the collection before the ship arrives, not after.
Stricter than anything on the road
- No personal items in the vehicle. Not 100 lbs — zero. Ocean carriers enforce this at the gate.
- Quarter tank of fuel maximum.
- The undercarriage must be clean; agricultural inspection rejects soil and plant material.
- Original title, or a notarized lienholder authorization letter if the vehicle is financed.
- Current registration in the name on the booking, plus government photo ID at drop-off.
- Notarized power of attorney if anyone else is dropping the vehicle at the port.
- Aftermarket alarms must be disabled.
What to plan for
Budget 14–21 days door-to-door from Naples, driven mostly by the sailing schedule rather than the driving. Cost is the mainland leg plus the ocean rate plus any port storage you incur, and the ocean rate moves with vessel space rather than with mileage. Book the two legs together so the vehicle is never sitting in a port yard on your dime.
Alaska works similarly, with a Pacific Northwest port or the Alaska Highway depending on the season. Ask for both options; they price very differently at different times of year.
