Insurance and Claims, Explained Without the Sales Pitch
Most of what customers are told about transport insurance is marketing. Here is the structure as federal law actually arranges it.
Call 239-273-4649The carrier insures the car, not the broker
The motor carrier hauling your vehicle carries the cargo liability policy that covers it in transit — typically $250,000 on open equipment and $1,000,000 on enclosed. We are a broker: we vet that coverage, request the certificate, and confirm it is active before dispatch. We do not insure your vehicle, and no honest broker will tell you otherwise.
What our bond covers
Our $75,000 surety bond is a federal requirement for brokers. It protects carriers and customers against a broker's failure to pay or perform. It is not vehicle damage coverage. Two different instruments, two different purposes.
Your own policy
Most personal auto policies remain in force while a vehicle is in transit, and many collector policies specifically address it. Call your agent before shipping and ask the question directly. For an agreed-value collector car, your own policy is usually the better instrument anyway.
What cargo insurance does not cover
Personal items in the vehicle. Pre-existing damage. Mechanical failure not caused by the carrier. Acts of God in most policies. Damage discovered after a clean delivery Bill of Lading was signed. That last one is why the inspection matters more than the policy limit.
Where to go next
Read the Bill of Lading page before your pickup, and the claim-filing page if something has already gone wrong.
