How Auto Transport Insurance Works
Every motor carrier operating in interstate transport is required to carry liability and cargo insurance. What that actually covers, and how much, varies — which is why asking specific questions beats assuming.
Call 239-273-4649What to verify
- That the carrier's cargo coverage is active for your dates.
- The coverage limit, and how it applies when several vehicles are on one truck.
- Whether there is a deductible and who is responsible for it.
- What is excluded — personal items in the vehicle almost always are.
Common exclusions
Acts of nature, pre-existing damage, mechanical failures unrelated to transport, and personal property inside the car are typically outside cargo coverage. Damage caused during loading or unloading is generally within it.
Your own policy
Some personal auto policies extend coverage while a vehicle is in transport and some do not. It is worth a phone call to your insurer before a long seasonal move, especially for a high-value or collector vehicle.
The document that decides everything
The bill of lading and its condition report are what a claim rests on. Photographs and a signed, accurate report at both ends are worth more than any verbal assurance.
