Can Snowbirds Put Luggage and Personal Items in a Shipped Car?
This is the most common snowbird question there is, and the honest answer has three parts: many carriers allow a limited amount, it is generally not insured, and weight is a legal issue for the driver.

- A modest amount of soft luggage, typically kept below the window line and in the trunk or rear cargo area.
- Items that do not shift, block the driver's ability to move the car, or add meaningful weight.
What is not
- Firearms, hazardous materials, flammables and anything illegal — no exceptions.
- Valuables, jewelry, documents, medication and electronics. Not because a carrier will object, but because they are not covered.
- Loading the car to the roof. Carriers are weighed at inspection stations, and an overloaded vehicle is the driver's legal problem.
Why weight matters more than you'd think
A ten-car carrier runs close to legal weight limits when fully loaded. A hundred extra pounds per vehicle adds up fast, and a driver who gets weighed can be fined. That is why some carriers refuse personal items outright and why others cap it.
The practical rule
Ask before you pack, keep it light and soft, and assume anything you put in the car travels at your own risk. Cargo in the vehicle is generally not part of auto transport insurance.
