- Peak southbound (October, November): two to four weeks ahead of your target pickup.
- Peak northbound (April): three to six weeks ahead, and February is not too early.
- Shoulder months (September, January, March, May): one to three weeks is usually workable.
- Enclosed transport in any peak month: add two weeks to whatever the open estimate would be.
- Long-haul, low-density origins — Maine, the Dakotas, Nebraska, western Michigan: add a week.
Booking early is not the same as a guaranteed date
Booking early expands the pool of trucks that could take your vehicle. It does not create a contractual pickup date, and anyone who offers you one in peak season is telling you what you want to hear.
What if you're already late?
Loads do still get placed on short notice, particularly on dense lanes like Chicago, New York and Detroit. Flexibility becomes the currency: a wider window and a meet at an accessible location will get you moved faster than anything else.
