May belongs to the Upper Midwest and northern New England: Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Dakotas, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, where April can still deliver a hard frost. Early May carries April's momentum; by late May the Naples lanes thin quickly.
That thinning cuts both ways. There is less competition for space, but there are also fewer trucks working the lane at all — particularly for the long, low-density runs to the northern plains and northern New England.
